Watch Cecilia Chiang Talk Pearls and Real Chinese Food

San Francisco fixture and grand dame of Chinese cuisine Cecilia Chiang sat down with Nowness for a quick conversation about her role in bringing authentic Chinese fare to the United States. Chiang, who received a James Beard Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013, founded the iconic Mandarin restaurant in 1961 and ran the place for 30 years in a restaurant landscape dominated by men and mostly European cuisine. In the short film, Chiang talks about her latent interest in fashion design, her love of pearls and her aesthetic of simplicity, as well as reflecting on the beginnings of her now-role in bringing upscale Chinese cuisine to the American masses.
