With North Beach's Bottle Cap shuttered and its chef-owner Dane Boryta off to upcoming mini-golf restaurant UP @ Urban Putt, Sons & Daughters duo Teague Moriarty and Matt McNamara have made quick work of the space. After some coyness, they've announced a name and concept for the new restaurant, which abuts Washington Square Park and will fittingly be called The Square.
With the Michelin-starred Sons & Daughters and spinoff Sweet Woodruff under their belts, Moriarty and McNamara are looking to revive the convivial vibe of the location's former incarnation as neighborhood fixture Washington Square Bar & Grill. One-third of the restaurant's 90 seats will be reserved for walk-ins, and the plan is for an approachable and affordable atmosphere that will appeal to locals and tourists alike. McNamara's mother, who worked on the pair's previous two restaurants, is in charge of the new spot's design, which will include a dining room, a communal table and counter seating at the original copper bar.
Clean and classic flavors will characterize the streamlined menu, which will feature approachable dishes like chicken-fried quail with romesco, barley and green-garlic risotto, smoked Dungeness crab, and baby back ribs with cucumber and mint (and yes, of course, there will be a burger). The beverage program will be spearheaded by Sons & Daughters' Amy Racine, who's bringing together the 65-bottle wine list with a focus on local and European varietals. There will be full liquor behind the bar, and cocktails will have a fresh and playful focus (think a 7&7 with Johnnie Walker Red and geranium soda and a French 226 with Hendrick's Gin, fresh citrus, chamomile, and champagne).
The Square will open its doors on March 1st, and late-night diners will have another great option to join Tosca, Comstock Saloon, and 15 Romolo: dinner service will begin at 5pm and stretch all the way to 1am Wednesdays through Sundays.
