While Arinell has long held down the corner of 16th and Valencia, the 24th Street corridor has been harder-pressed to provide a quality slice, a fact that six-month-old Rustic and now straightforwardly named newcomer The Pizza Shop are attempting to address. The petite former Mike's Deli space at 24th and Folsom features pies by chef-owner Thomas Jividen, a Jersey Shore slice-shop veteran who was most recently in San Diego, where he worked at that city's megapopular Bronx Pizza. Laurie Badger, previously of Golden Boy Pizza, is heading up the service side of the operation.

The duo are keeping things simple: as is traditional, a glass case displays the various whole-pie varieties, which are heated by the slice ($4) in the oven. Options include the Meat-O (pepperoni, sausage, meatball), artichoke and plum tomato, and a white pie with spinach; full pies ($19, with toppings at $2 each) are also available for sharing or takeout.

The Pizza Shop also has a beer and wine license in the works, and hopes to serve bottled brews in the near future. For now, it's a relaxed place to get a quick bite, with four wood tables, a standing bar, a mural of deer, and bright green chairs. With hours from 11 am-10 pm daily, it's intended more for lunchers than barflies, but that doesn't seem likely to impede its popularity with the pizza-starved masses.
