Craft distilling is heating up in the Bay Area, and the latest distiller to join the fray is Workhouse Rye, the pet project of bartender Rob Easter and artist David Gordon. Through "gypsy distilling" at other Bay Area distilleries, the duo have produced a pair of initial rye whiskeys (Palehorse, aged in used whiskey barrels, and Darkhorse, aged in used Sutton Cellars wine barrels), and are working on producing Four Barrel coffee-rye bitters. They seek $25K for more whiskey-making activity, and are offering rewards like a bottle of the bitters ($24) or a blending session ($300). [Kickstarter]
