Bauer is getting tired of industrial decor, dubbing the space at Ala Romana as like "a prison barracks," with a communal table "so tight against the wall that waiters have problems serving." Chef David Taylor "adapts to the limited facilities" with dishes that don't need cooking, like "powerful" puntarelle, but saves space for "must-have" fried artichoke hearts and "expertly prepared" flank steak. And apparently the Meyer lemon ice cream alone is worth returning for. And so, despite that decor and a "a safe, boring and incomplete" wine list, Ala Romana earns two stars, and 2.5 for food.
