The ongoing East Bay beer boom continues with news that Chuck Stilphen of The Trappist, Øl Beercafe & Bottle Shop in Walnut Creek and Mikkeller Bar in San Francisco is bringing a barbecue and beer joint to downtown Berkeley. Called Perdition Smokehouse, the new spot will enlist executive chef Michael O'Brien (also of Mikkeller and The Trappist) to create a Texas-style barbecue offering alongside a robust beer selection.
Though what constitutes authentic barbecue is a notoriously contentious issue, Stilphen and O'Brien will import two meat smokers from Texas, where they've already traveled for menu research. And though Stilphen's previous project have focused on European-style brews, Perdition will feature 40 American craft beers on tap, the better to pair with meaty barbecue fare.
A 50-seat back patio with communal picnic tables will be a big draw for the new spot, which will also seat 80 inside. And fans of Mikkeller's sausages take heed: Perdition's kitchen will also turn out homemade sausages that will retail around town under the Mikkeller Sausage Company name.
Stilphen is targeting an early summer opening date, so stay tuned for updates.
