It's high tide for tiki bars in the Bay Area these days, with Smuggler's Cove landing a book deal, Hawker Fare adding tiki-inspired cocktails, and the Tonga Room boasting a revamped cocktail menu that's significantly improved its business. Now, Tablehopper brings word that a new tropical cocktail project is on the way for the shuttered Disco Volante space in Oakland: Longitude, which is named for its owner, Forbidden Island alum Suzanne Long. Long has a background in rum education, and she plans to offer a full complement of island-style and tiki-inspired drinks that showcase the overlooked spirit and an extensive spirit list that features rums and whiskies.
The new spot will also offer a full pub menu with multi-cultural inspiration, though details on a chef and dishes are still to come. The interior design comes from Bamboo Ben, and will sport coastal and African influences with a thatched hut, animal prints, Ivory Coast masks and the like. For now, Long is targeting a spring opening date, so look out for updates soon.
