Status: Opening today
Hayes Valley ice cream destination Smitten is in full expansion mode with today's opening of their new Rockridge location, which joins a Palo Alto outpost and an upcoming Lafayette spot in the ice creamery's quest for sweet supremacy.
At three time the size of Smitten's shipping container-sized Hayes Valley location, the new spot will serve as a flagship location for Smitten as they join neighbors the Ramen Shop and Zachary's Pizza in a Rockridge food scene that continues to flourish. Designed by BCV Architects, the space features nods to its history with corrugated steep, graffiti and the brand's signature bright red, as well as a 10-foot, 2,000 liter liquid nitrogen tank by the counter.
The tank underscores Smitten's unique preparation process, which uses liquid nitrogen to freeze each ice cream to order using their patented Brrr™ machine. A commitment to locally and seasonally sourced ingredients and creative combinations also characterizes the company's offering, and will carry over to their new East Bay locations. For now, look for April's seasonal rhubarb crisp flavor made with oatmeal cookie crumbles, plus a full complement of their more classic flavors (see their menu here). In addition to scoops, the new shop will debut new menu items created pastry chef Robyn Lenzi, including a variety of sundaes, floats, and vegan pops.
For East Bay ice cream lovers further afield, stay news for more news on Smitten's Lafayette location, which will open its doors sometime in May.
