After a successful first year at their storefront in the Mission, the Boba Guys are in expansion mode. Andrew Chau and Bin Chen launched a Kickstarter this morning to raise $30K for a second shop in the current Lang's Tea Company space at Stockton and Bush. The space is getting a total makeover to include a glossy modern storefront, as well as a "Boba Guys Labs" in the back, where the duo plan to make their goodies and offer classes to the public on topics like tea tasting and spherification. As with the Mission location, they'll offer snacks like macarons and Hong Kong-style milk toast to accompany the drinks.
The duo are promoting the campaign with the motto "#fightthepowder," which is intended as a rebuke to boba competitors who rely on powdered mixes. (In classic SF form, the Boba Guys pride themselves on brewing their own tea, making their own syrup, and using organic milk.) Rewards include two boba drinks and two macarons ($20), or a "Black Card" good for a year's worth of boba drinks ($500). If all goes well, the second shop should open sometime in June.
