Status: Softly open today; grand opening Tuesday

Back in January, we reported that Dogpatch dive The Goat was shuttering, to be taken over by Chris Lawrence and Brad LaMotte of Southern Pacific. Tonight, they're soft-opening their new spot The Sea Star, which they hope will retain the classic dive-bar feel of the spot (which has been a bar for over a century) while sprucing up the drink offering and ambiance.

Interior construction has restored the original redwood wainscoting and uncovered windows that were previously blocked, allowing more light into the space. Victorian flocked wallpaper and an expanded back area are also part of the updates, which will add warmth and make the pool table area more open and usable for bar patrons.

Already beer-oriented thanks to their work at Southern Pacific, Lawrence and LaMotte have established twelve taps in the new space, which will be a mix of West Coast styles (think Deschutes Black Butte Porter and Ninkasi Tricerahops) and Belgians (Liefmans Goudenband, La Chouffe). In addition to an appropriately divey beer can selection (Hamm's, Tecate, Bud Light) they've also put together a cocktail list that features classic drinks like Old Fashioneds, Manhattans and Boulevardiers, plus margaritas and Bloody Marys for the afternoon crowd. (See the full drink menu here.)

Opening up just in time for the Giants' home opener, the Sea Star is aimed at local sports fans, with happy hour and pregame specials (check their Facebook page for updates). Though they'll be softly open tonight at 5 pm, they won't officially celebrate their grand opening until Tuesday, April 8th. Hours are 2pm-2am daily.
