The name Romper Room may bring to mind images of preschool play, but a forthcoming Union Square bar by that name will be oriented towards more adult fun. Joe Garvey, the founder of scavenger-hunt outfit CLASH, is taking over the recently shuttered Otis Lounge space on Maiden Lane for the project, which will host CLASH's boozy scavenger events for office groups by day, then transform into a bar with an 85-person capacity in the evening. (The former offering, which boasts a lot of dares, dancing, and crazy costumes, earned Garvey the moniker of "Tech Party King" from the Chron.)
Like Dalva's Hideout and Oddjob's SRO, the Romper Room will feature a more cocktail-oriented bar within a bar, known as the Leopard Lounge. The main bar will be more easygoing and party-oriented, with monthly theme events and a happy hour in the evenings. C Walters, which is responsible for Blackbird, Hi Tops, and the Golden Gate Tap Room, will be in charge of design, which Garvey is staying mum on for now ("Expect some fun stuff.") The Romper Room is scheduled to commence play in late summer.
