Iconic North Beach fixture Lorenzo Petroni has passed away from esophageal cancer. Petroni opened North Beach Restaurant with partner Bruno Orsi in 1970, attracting a following of socialites, politicians and more with his charismatic brand of hospitality. He's cited as a major inspiration for younger restaurateurs like Michael Chiarello, and his family passes on "one last thought" from Lorenzo: "Life is too short to drink bad wine… so salute!"
