When one door closes, another opens, and so it is with Ryan Scott's latest string of projects. Last month, Market & Rye's West Portal location shuttered to free up time and energy for the debut of Mason, Scott's latest endeavor. Opened last night, Mason is a next-door expansion of his Potrero Hill Market & Rye, and aims to serve an evening and late-night crowd with hours from 4pm to 11pm daily, plus weekend brunch.
With no dishes clocking in over $18, Scott is aiming for a casual, neighborhood vibe with the new spot. On the menu are starters like olives with citrus and lavender and avocado toast with brie, roasted garlic and sea salt, plus entrees like grilled scallops with cauliflower and smoked almonds, smoked short ribs with potato purée and pickled cherry tomatoes, and wood-fired pizzas from the oven left over from the space's Pizza Nostra days.
Desserts include soft serve ice cream, which is also available in float form with orange soda or porter beer, plus desserts like butterscotch pudding with bourbon cream and rosemary cookies, courtesy of Luis Villavelasquez of Les Éléments Patisserie.
Look for a beverage program headed up by Gregory Condes (formerly of Gary Danko), which will include an offering of local brews on tap, plus wine by the glass and a refreshingly affordable bottle list, with no bottle over $30.
Mason is open weekdays from 4pm, and on Fridays, it will run a "Power Lunch" schedule 11am all the way to closing at 11pm. Weekend brunch will run Saturdays and Sundays, from 10:30am-3pm.
