Since the closing of the short-lived Maestro 18 months ago, the massive space formerly home to Trader Vic's and Jeremiah Tower's iconic 80s-era Stars has sat vacant. Now, word comes that the team behind SOMA bar Oddjob will be taking on the space for a new project called the Empire Room.
Insider Scoop brings news of the new bar and nightclub concept, which has Jordan Langer (of the tiny, now-shuttered Big) and Pete Glikshtern (of Jones) behind it.
The new plans call for an atmosphere drawing heavily from the team's previous projects, with the space's former dining room to become a Jones-inspired bar and lounge, and the second, more intimate dining room to become a more upscale bar-within-a-bar (like Oddjob's unfortunately named SRO). A food menu will also be on offer, as the team plans to offer up their space as a commissary kitchen for food truck proprietors, with three or four trucks rotating through the kitchen and offering their fare inside the bar.
If you're wondering how the old building can survive in today's condo-raising climate, the answer is: it won't. Plans to raze the building and construct high rises in its place are in the works, but they're still a few years out, meaning that the Empire Room has an expiration date in the form of a brief three-year lease. In keeping with the temporary nature of the project, aesthetic changes will be relatively superficial, and the Empire Room has an opening target of Halloween.
In the meantime, Langer and Glikshtern are keeping busy with another big project: the still-unnamed Castro marketplace , which is moving forward with its Ferry Building-inspired concept. They've got a January 2015 opening date in mind, and later this year, they'll be accepting vender applicants for the new space, which will feature a dozen or more local food, cheese, wine and clothing purveyors. We'll keep you posted with updates on both projects.
