News broke recently that the Sushi Ran team was planning its first-ever expansion in the old Pesce space in the Castro. Sushi Ran vice president Suzie Buchholz told Eater that the concept is "fun, sophisticated, casual Japanese, with a full bar," but that many details were still being nailed down. One that’s now certain: the name. The restaurant will be called Nomica, which has a few meanings. "It’s a fun little nod to our neighbors," Buchholz said. Noe Valley (no), Mission (mi) and Castro (ca) are all represented. "Also, it means ‘drinking house’ in Japanese, which conjures up good times with friends," she continued. "Since we will have a full bar and a very convivial atmosphere, that seems like a good association." While the Sushi Ran team is remaining tight-lipped on any other details so far, the name is a peek inside the atmosphere they hope to create. "Nomica just sounds fun, friendly and Japanese," Buchholz said.
