After four years on Sansome, seafood-oriented restaurant Georges has decided to pack it in, with plans to shutter on February 27. But co-owner Jay Marx will continue on with the new tenants: popular Tenderloin wine bar The Barrel Room, which will be shutting down its petite original location in the Fitzgerald Hotel and moving into the prime FiDi space, as well as a former nail salon right next door. Owned by Sarah Trubnick and Carolyn Johnson, The Barrel Room is centered on offering rotating flights of small-production wines alongside cheese and charcuterie; in late 2013, it opened a larger sequel in Rockridge, complete with a full food menu.
Alongside fourth partner Stephen Deyton (Park Tavern), Trubnick, Johnson, and Marx will transform the former salon into a retail shop and tasting room (which will become a wine bar with small plates by evening), while Georges will become a 60-seat restaurant featuring food from the Rockridge location's chef, Manuel Hewitt.
As with Rockridge, the menu will offer a variety of regional dishes to accompany a shifting selection of wines, essentially turning the restaurant into an entirely new concept each quarter;
for example, the emphasis at Rockridge is currently French wine, which means a menu of boeuf bourgignon, endive au gratin, creme brulee, and other Gallic classics. However, the new spot will also have a more ambitious year-round offering of small plates, including crudo, caviar, oysters, and housemade charcuterie.
On the wine side, the new Barrel Room plans to offer 50+ wines by the glass, 200+ by the bottle, and 25 or so craft beers, with a continued emphasis on flights. As a bonus, they'll inherit Georges' full liquor license—so they can work in cocktails with regional ingredients, and cocktail flights. Guests can buy bottles to take home, or join a monthly wine club. The space will also get an interior refresh, with a "rustic modern" brown and cream color scheme, redwood accents, and a handful of sidewalk tables. The new spot is also looking to raise $5K on Kickstarter. If all goes according to plan, expect it to debut in mid-April.
