The wait for a spot at chef Fukuji Sugai's sushi counter might get a little shorter in the near future. As Hoodline reported this week, O-Toro Sushi will be packing up their diminutive space on Oak Street and moving a few blocks East to the corner of Gough and Fell Streets, the current home of Bai Thong Thai.
Per Hoodline, the restaurant has been looking for some extra square footage and a space in the same neighborhood makes sense. Chef Sugai will naturally be making the move as well, bringing along his 30 years of experience and an Omakase menu.
Bai Thong Thai once claimed they were being bullied by Yelp, and even inspired an entire editorial in the Los Angeles Times, but their Yelp rating has actually gone up slightly since that spat in 2013. According to employees of both restaurants, Bai Thong's owners are headed for retirement.
A change of ownership notice has already popped up in Bai Thong's window, but there's no move-in date yet for O-Toro Sushi, which will probably need to give the space a quick makeover first.
