The Mission's Minako Organic Japanese Is Shutting Down After 15 Years

Another idiosyncratic slice of the Mission disappears.

Minako/Facebook

Another heartbreaker in what seems to be an endless line of spring restaurant closings: Minako Organic Japanese Restaurant, the adorable sushi shoebox that's been holding it down on Mission Street since 2000, is closing its doors this week. In a post on Facebook, the mother-daughter team of Yoko Kondo and Minako "Judy" Hisamatsu say that they've lost their lease, as "the landlord's uncle wants the space, and they've already signed papers." They initially thought they'd have an extra year to say goodbye, but are now shutting down after service this Friday, April 10th.

Happily, this won't necessarily be the end of Minako, as the owners add that they plan to take a few months' break and then look for a new location. In the meantime, we're left to mourn the loss of Minako's top-notch vegan offerings, delicious housemade pickles and umeboshi, and that insane aquarium-themed bathroom. RIP, Minako.
