When All-Star Donuts closed its doors after 28 years of glazed-filled memories on Chestnut Street, neighborhood residents mourned the death of their go-to 24-hour doughnut source. Now the space has returned to life as SF's second outpost of Glaze Teriyaki Grill, a fast-casual restaurant serving Seattle-style teriyaki.
Set to open tomorrow, Wednesday, May 13, the Marina Glaze will debut the company's new look and feel, designed by Brooklyn-based HeCHO Inc. The Chestnut location will feature 38 seats' worth communal tables and benches, plus outdoor seating and a take-out window for quickie to-go orders and late-night snack attacks.
The menu features a variety of grilled, teriyaki-sauced proteins (hanger steak, salmon, chicken thigh or breast, pork loin, tofu and vegetables) over rice or salad, alongside appetizers like crispy gyoza with dipping sauce and cold soba noodle salad. There'll also be beer, wine and sake.
In a somewhat nostalgic gesture, Glaze will also serve Dynamo Donuts, in remembrance of the space's original doughnut-slinging tenants (although we're pretty sure All Star never served maple-glazed bacon apple donuts, or anything rose-flavored). They've held on to the iconic neon "Donuts by All Star" sign, with the subtle addition of their own signage.
Glaze will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Stay tuned for extended late-night hours in the next few months.
