Although it has been looming on the horizon for quite some time, fans of the eclectic, tot-centric menu at Bender's Bar & Grill will still be bummed to learn that chef-owner Sean Asmar is giving up control of the kitchen. Uptown Almanac shared the news that Asmar will now focus exclusively on his new-ish Oakland bar and restaurant, Analog.
Apparently the kitchen is now under the control of a longtime veteran of Bender's, who is pulling in a yet-unnamed fellow chef with experience in SF kitchens like Phoenix and Old Ship. Hopefully that means that some of the much loved menu at Bender's, which featured burgers stuffed with whiskey and chunks of bacon, a wide variety of vegan options, like the "cockless" Buffalo chik'n sandwich and tater tots, will stay the same. While owner Johnny Davis wasn't ready to give specifics on the new menu, he said that it will be seasonal and locally sourced, with most things made in house. And, wait for it, tots will remain on the menu.
So don't worry, ye fans of whiskey shots and PBR, there will be plenty of tots and even more items to soak up all those terrible drinking mistakes. Meanwhile, fans of that vegan chick'n sandwich can still head over to Analog for a taste. Stay tuned for more details on a new era of bar food in the Mission.
