So, what is the definition of cheap, anyway? Is it a sandwich for under $5? A meal for under $10? It varies from person to person and place to place, though lately San Francisco has become notorious for high prices and extremely precious offerings.
While San Francisco may have gotten flack for the "$4 toast" that seemingly signaled the gentrification of the city, that's only part of the story. This bread (from Josey Baker Bread) is made from house-milled grain, has beautiful toppings they make in-house, like locally-farmed strawberry jam, nutella, almond butter, and pumpkin puree. Breakfast-seekers get a thick, generous slice, soaked in butter and draped in stewed fruits. It's a hearty and comforting breakfast that doesn't exactly break the bank at $4. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find cheaper.
