UPDATED: Boogaloo's Mission Space Listed as 'For Rent,' Available in September

Looks like Boogaloo's, home of the vegetarian herb cream gravy, is not long for this world. According to a rental listing on real estate site Loopnet, the space is up for grabs starting in September 2015 (ahem, next week).

The restaurant has been a Mission brunch standard for upwards of 18 years, serving a signature mish-mash of vegetarian-friendly brunch and lunch items every day of the week. Now it appears that management is ready to call it quits on one of the busiest dining thoroughfares in the Mission.

In an article last fall, Mission Local spoke with Boogaloo's longtime GM Peter Hood, who has "an interest" in Boogaloo's, as well as St. Francis Fountain and Parada 22. At the time, Hood was in the midst of selling two other Mission restaurants, Dante's Weird Fish and The Perch (a concept slated for the former The Corner space, but which never opened), citing a changing Mission as his main impetus. An over-saturated dining scene that had become over-regulated with mandates like Healthy San Francisco were part of Hood's concerns, who told Mission Local that "...across the board, anyone who has been around the Mission at all felt that the pie was getting slightly smaller. What can you do there with so many new businesses and seats?" Hood went on to say that business at Boogaloos had also declined, which could be a contributing factor to the restaurant's impending closure.

The 3,572-square-foot space is listed at $17,500/mo and described as "everything you would hope for in developing your new epicurean heaven," and touting a location where "San Francisco' s elite will come to experience your next grand restaurant." In an area experiencing an influx of high-end restaurants like Aster, Californios and Lazy Bear, there is small doubt that the next tenant will be reaching for the stars as well.

UPDATE, 3:25 p.m.: According to Hood, the reason for vacating Boogaloo's primo location is indeed due to their newly raised, "whacked out Valencia Street rent," which the business wasn't willing to pay. And while Hood confirms that the search for a tenant is on starting in September, he says "We want to stay as long as we can for our employees. Our main concern is keeping our current staff employed and helping them find new jobs." Since the restaurant is just now hitting the market (with its whacked out rent), that means it could be a while. Either way Boogaloo's will have 30 days notice, which means there will be time to snag a last "Temple 'O Spuds." And, says Hood, he's "open to relocating," if a reasonable rent still exists in this town.
