After his departure from Mill Valley Beerworks, hero chef David Wilcox (Gjelina) has been keeping a low profile, traveling the world and spending time with family. But now he's back in the kitchen, helming the stoves at Amoura in South SF, where he's officially been named executive chef after a consulting chef role. Wilcox told Eater that the Shihadeh Family, who has owned the Amoura brand (located in SFO and Westfield Mall) for over 40 years, approached him and "made it clear they wanted to elevate what they have been doing." Though the restaurant is very different from Beerworks, he's brought in a lot of his former staff to reinvent the Mediterranean menu through a California lens, meaning lots of vegetarian-friendly items, more seafood, shared plates and bar snacks. "We're really just having fun with both traditional and non-traditional eastern Mediterranean cuisine using the best California has to offer," Wilcox said.
Wilcox plans to spend Monday through Thursday focusing on Amoura, while traveling down to Los Angeles to hold pop-up dinners (which he's done many of in the past) while planning a bigger project of his own. Stay tuned for more details on that to come.
