MID-MARKET—Gabriela Cámara's much-anticipated restaurant, Cala, opens for previews tonight with a limited menu. Cámara told Eater last week she hopes to expand on what Californians typically think of Mexican food with a seafood-centric menu that keeps with her Slow Food philosophy. During the preview, the team will be fine-tuning details, and a grand opening is planned for early October.
TENDERLOIN—The team behind Ace's and Dobbs Bar re-opened Ha-Ra Club in the TL as of last Friday. Urban Daddy reports the original bar is still there, as are the red velvet walls and vintage chandeliers. Sadly, Carl the cranky bartender, will no longer be there to kick you out for ordering "the wrong" drink or playing pool too loudly... but you can still play pool on the original table, so that's a good thing.
FINANCIAL DISTRICT—Hoodline reports that Cow Hollow's Marengo on Union, opened up Marengo on the Alley quietly last Thursday night. The menu is similar to one at Marengo on Union Street, but there will be new sliders and salads soon. The new spot is in the former Gio's and Sydney Town Tavern space which, as the name implies, is on an alley-like street. Lunch will launch in a week, followed by happy hour and brunch soon after that.
MISSION—Nostra Spaghetteria (Alexander Alioto) is officially serving its casual and neighborhood-friendly fare after a soft opening earlier this month. The bar area, called Bar Mia, is also open now with an amaro-focused cocktail menu and a tapas-style menu.
BERKELEY—Taqueria Sinaloa, one of the best taco trucks in Fruitvale, finally stopped resisting the demands of the people and opened Tacos Sinaloa, its first brick-and-mortar location, in Berkeley at the end of last week.
HAYES VALLEY—Over in Hayes Valley, Shido, a family-run sushi restaurant opened its door today. There's an extensive menu to kick things off with a tasting menu planned for when the owners have a better idea of what people in the neighborhood want.
SAN ANSELMO—Farm Burger, the Georgia-based mini chain that opened its first west coast restaurant in Berkeley last year, opens its second Bay Area location today. The new San Anselmo location has 65 seats inside, 45 seats outside, and will feature a menu of burgers, salads, and desserts based on products from local California farmers and ranchers who share their commitment to ethical sourcing.
POTRERO HILL—Dat Spot Rotisserie & Comfort Food, the new restaurant from Jocelyn Bulow (Chez Maman), was scheduled to open up in the old Chez Maman space today, but the opening has been delayed with the new date set for Monday, September 28.
