Uber Eats Launches Standalone App, Expands To All-Day Delivery

Six months after the launch of UberEats, Uber’s food delivery service in San Francisco, the transportation company is upping the ante with a standalone app dedicated solely to UberEats. Launching Tuesday, March 15, the service includes a much-expanded list of restaurants, a widened delivery area and longer hours. Prior to the expansion, UberEats delivered a set list of five to seven meals a day, for weekday lunch only in certain areas downtown (Mission Bay, Hayes Valley, SOMA, FiDi, Chinatown, Nob Hill, Tenderloin). Now, over 100 restaurants are delivering to the entire 7x7, seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

“The Uber app is really good at helping you to get a ride, but when you browse for food, it’s a different experience. People want to see more images and options and be able to tailor their meals,” UberEats general manager Susan Alban told Eater. “So we thought a new app was the right thing to do for meeting eaters’ needs and restaurants’ needs to highlight their food and menus.”

The new app has menus from over 100 restaurants throughout the city (see the full list below) from which users can order off the regular menu and wait 20 to 45 minutes or choose from a daily-changing “Instant Eats” option, the same as how the service has been operating, with a set menu of five to seven dishes that arrive in under 10 minutes (still only available in Mission Bay, Hayes Valley, SOMA, FiDi, Chinatown, Nob Hill, Tenderloin).

For now, there is no delivery fee, but in a week or two, a $5 fee, which “helps support driver payment,” will be added to regular menu orders. As it operates now, a $1.50 fee applies to Instant Eats orders. There is no way to tip drivers (“The best way to thank your driver is with a good rating,” Alban said.). According to Alban, most menu prices are the same as in the restaurants, but as restaurants set the dish prices, some may be different. The app is now available for iOS and Android from the Apple and Google Play stores.
