Il Cane Rosso, an anchor tenant in the Ferry Building since 2009, has ended its run as of Sunday, April 3. Chef/owner Lauren Kiino decided not to renew the lease for the space for financial reasons, though she will still operate the brand through catering and events.
It's a sad goodbye to one of the Ferry Building's staples, which offered simple, but thoughtful options on the regular. (They really had a way with pork sandwiches.) The rotisserie and sandwich shop was originally started by the now-essential SF chef Daniel Patterson (Coi) in 2009 before he handed it over to Kiino in 2011. Kiino still has Red Dog (which is temporarily closed, but expected to reopen) and Fearless Coffee on her roster.
No word yet on what will take over the coveted space that includes a Bay Bridge-facing outdoor seating area. Stay tuned for more details.
