Liholiho Yacht Club has consistently been San Francisco's hottest restaurant since it opened over a year ago, but chef/owner Ravi Kapur is not resting on his laurels. Kapur surprise opened a hidden bar called Louie's Gen-Gen Room in the restaurant's basement this week, and the vibe skews away from Kapur's Hawaiian heritage. He created an entirely new menu for the 24-seat space, keeping it simple with bar bites and a whole waffle section (there's no hood for ventilation downstairs, making cooking more elaborate dishes difficult).
The menu — in full below — has all classic bar snacks like beef jerky and potato chips, but of course given a cheffy spin using wagyu beef for the jerky and topping the potato chips with caviar. As for the waffles, those are completely dairy- and gluten-free and topped with intriguing combinations like uni, avocado, and toasted walnut or ham, nectarine chutney, and honey butter.
Drinks from bar manager Yanni Kehagiaras are kept simple, most with a maximum of three ingredients, but also have an interesting take, like The Barrel, with Eagle Rare bourbon, passion fruit, and burnt sugar. Co-owner Jeff Hanak (Nopa) created a list of magnum-only wines that are available by the bottle or glass.
Peruse through the full menu below, and then best of luck scoring a reservation.
