Taiyaki soft serve is officially the new food of Instagram. Haven’t heard of it? Then get your butt on social media, because the fish-shaped ice cream cone filled with Japanese-inspired ice cream flavors like matcha, black sesame, and tofu is the stuff likes are made of. While taiyaki (fish-shaped cake) has been available in the area for a while at places like May’s Coffee Shop in Japantown, the addition of the cone option has really upped the ante.
The most popular place serving it in the Bay Area right now is Uji Time, which opened three months ago in Berkeley. In that time, the adorable dessert has been popping up on feeds in growing quantities.
This food has all the makings of social media success: it’s new, there are just 15 available each day, and it’s still under-the-radar enough to make you seem cool for catching one. Not to mention it’s incredibly adorable and photogenic. It’s also officially a country-wide phenomenon, grabbing the attention of thirsty New York City Instagrammers, too.
To get your hands (and filters) on one, head to Uji Time in Berkeley, but make sure you’re there right when it opens at 3 p.m. on weekdays and 1 p.m. on weekends. Otherwise you likely won’t score one of the precious few made daily (each pancake-like cone takes 30 minutes to make, so it’s a very labor-intensive pursuit). May the odds be ever in your favor.
