The Tenderloin continues to grow as a drinking destination, helped along in the last year by Whitechapel, The Saratoga, and Black Cat. Now, two new bars have debuted on the gritty streets, providing even more fancy cocktails for the imbibing. Biig and Rum & Sugar are both (separately) focused on craft drinks in curated, pretty spaces.
Welcome Big owners Peter Glickshtern (Jones), Jordan Langer, Ryan Melchiano, and Ryan Hisamune back to the city, as they’re reviving their popular, but short-lived cocktail bar as Biig. Biig follows in its predecessor’s footsteps by not offering a cocktail menu, instead serving patrons cocktails based on their preferences, discovered through a conversation with the bartender. All drinks are served in beautiful vintage glassware, atop a showy marble bar. Eventually, owners plan to open a private party room next door called Burgandy. Biig is open daily from 5 p.m. to “close.”
Meanwhile, neighbor Rum & Sugar is the handiwork of first-time bar owners Olga Zhuravskaya and Natasha Avtonomova, who brought on renowned mixologist Dave Nepove to consult on the cocktail menu. Drinks are — surprise — rum focused, but there is also beer and wine on offer at the copper bartop, surrounded by chandeliers and a wall mural. Rum & Sugar is open daily from 2 a.m. to 2 p.m.
That’s not all that’s on tap for the neighborhood’s drinking scene; the months to come will bring The Brim and Hitachino Beer & Wagyu.
