Highly anticipated SoMa restaurant International Smoke is open for business. The new tenant of 301 Mission Street in the base of the Millennium Tower from celebrity chefs Michael Mina and Ayesha Curry is already generating lots of buzz. But if you’re planning to go try it for yourself, here’s what to know ahead of time.
It’s booked for months, but don’t be discouraged
The new restaurant is already booked solid through February — but diners are welcome to try their luck walking in. The owners say some tables are set aside for walk-ins, and there are seats at the bar, too. If you’re making long term plans, online reservations are here.
Yes, you could sit next to the Warriors
According to early reports from the dining room, Ayesha Curry’s trophy husband, Steph, was at the restaurant right off the bat, apparently with his whole team after the game.
This is the chef that probably cooked your food
While it takes a village to run a restaurant like International Smoke — and the mayor of that village is unquestionably Ayesha Curry — chef Jeremy McMillan leads the kitchen on a day-to-day basis. He arrives in San Francisco after serving as executive chef at Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steak in Arizona.
It’s not just barbecue
International Smoke is definitely courting carnivores with pork shoulder and pork ribs. But the whole list of offerings is a bit more nuanced. The emphasis appears more on liberal use of smoke than simply grilled meat, with items like smoked burrata with Brussels sprouts and cured squash. The whole menu is right here.
You’ll need to speak a lot of different languages to read the graffiti inside
International in name and scope, the new restaurant is also decked out in many languages of graffiti. Take a look inside the newly renovated space and see for yourself, though you may need a translator to understand it all.
