Elbo Room, a staid Mission District bar with an upstairs venue space, is expanding its reach across the bay, adding a second location near Jack London Square in Oakland. The bar’s management announced the move on Facebook, indicating that the new Elbo Room, known as Elbo Room Jack London Square, could be open as soon as early January.
The new location is the former Night Light space at 311 Broadway. Like the Elbo Room on Valencia Street, it sports a downstairs bar with an upstairs venue. The Night Light appears to have closed sometime in early fall.
The expansion is a reversal of fortune for the Elbo Room, which didn’t look long for this world as recently as 2014. At the time, the Valencia Street building owners, who also founded Elbo Room, were floating the idea of demolishing the space for condos. But that project hit snags, and in 2015, the bar’s lease was extended through 2018. This summer, It was extended again through 2019.
Eater SF has reached out to Elbo Room’s management for details of the new project and will update accordingly.
