A new Hayes Valley ice cream shop opened Sunday, slinging soft serve in fish-shaped taiyaki cones with the option of adding an edible unicorn horn on top, creating a sort of narwhal effect. Pisces Taiyaki Dessert is located just off Patricia’s Green at 488 Fell Street between Laguna and Octavia, and it debuts with a splashy opening week promotion: 50 percent off all orders all day until December 25, with free cones for the first ten customers every day. Daily hours are 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
For those who haven’t already caught onto the trend, taiyaki cones are a riff on popular Japanese fish-shaped cakes, taiyaki. They’re similar in flavor and texture to waffle cones, and can be found elsewhere in the Bay Area at spots like Uji Time in Japantown and Berkeley.
Pisces sells soft serve for $4.25 in a cup with two toppings included, and comes in vanilla, matcha, chocolate, and black sesame flavors, with combinations of those flavors also available. Taiyaki cones are $3 more, for $7.25.
But Pisces, which is operated by Zi Liu and Zhi Yu Wu, isn’t betting the farm on just one dessert trend. On top of taiyaki soft serve, they’re also serving rolled ice cream in taco-shaped cones and on donuts. That treat, which is scraped into spirals, comes in vanilla, matcha, and chocolate flavors, with additions like Oreo or Nutella available and a variety of toppings and syrups to add. It’s $5.99 with two toppings included for the cup, taco cone, or donut option.
