Though Hawker Fare Oakland will soon close its doors, chef-owner James Syhabout is plenty busy with other projects, including his just-announced Old Kan Beer & Co., the newly rebranded West Oakland brewery.

The takeover of the brewery space, which is adjacent to Syhabout’s restaurant The Dock, came to light last year as Linden Street Brewery announced that it would vacate the space. Now Adam Lamoreaux, the founder of Linden Street who split with the brewery in 2014 is returning to his roots as the head brewer at Old Kan, partnering with Syhabout to bring his classic beer styles back to West Oakland.

It’s a new beginning for everyone involved, as The Dock undergoes a renovation and reconcepting alongside the brewery. Its new iteration will continue to be beer-focused and casual, offering bar food like burgers, sandwiches, and sausages. Additionally, the two hope to liven things up with live music, as well as wholesale and retail sales of Old Kan beer.

Gamut

The new name (an anagram of Oakland) and branding comes from Gamut, the SF-based design studio behind other breweries like Cellarmaker and Fieldwork. The restaurant is slated to open in 2017; stay tuned for more details on Old Kan.
