Presidio Social Club Owner Eyes April for Los Gatos Restaurant Opening

The Catamount is going into the former space of beloved California Café

Real Town

After recently celebrating ten years of Presidio Social Club, owner Ray Tang is embarking on a new journey in the South Bay. His new restaurant, The Catamount, will open in Old Town Los Gatos in April, mimicking the social club vibes of his Presidio spot.

It’s all happening in the former space of the vaunted California Café space, which closed in July after 31 years. Named after Los Gatos (cat) and the Santa Cruz Mountains (mount), The Catamount is meant to be a solid neighborhood restaurant, much like Tang’s SF location. The menu will be all “approachable modern American cuisine,” which will include entree salads, chops and steaks, and a “Steam of the Day,” with steamed shellfish. The chef who will head up the kitchen has yet to be revealed.

Beverages will include craft cocktails that Tang says won’t leave guests hanging for too long, focusing on speed and simplicity. The wine list will span 100 varietals, with 70 percent sourced from local wineries and highlighting the Santa Cruz Mountain region.

And if Presidio Social Club’s black and white tile and leather banquettes are any indication, Los Gatos diners can expect a comfortable, “airier” experience in the 10,000-square-foot space, which was designed by SF’s Tecta Associates.

To start, the restaurant will offer dinner service seven nights a week, followed by lunch and brunch. Stay tuned for more.
