Salt & Straw

The opening Salt & Straw’s first San Francisco location is drawing nigh, with plans for a grand opening on Friday, April 14. It’s the first of two locations for the Portland-based ice cream chain, with the second en route to Hayes Valley in May. Owners Kim Malek and Tyler Malek already have five locations in Los Angeles, plus four in their hometown of Portland.

The duo is known for their experimental ice cream flavors like Arbequina olive oil, sea salt with caramel ribbons, and honey lavender. For the SF shops, they’ve planned six exclusive flavors with nods to the Bay Area’s bountiful produce and strong community of artisanal food producers. For example, the Cascara shrub with candied hibiscus is a collaboration between San Francisco’s Sightglass Coffee and Berkeley-based Shrub & Co., using apple cider vinegar, cascara (the fruit surrounding coffee beans), plus citrus and candied hibiscus flowers.

Check out all six flavors, plus the classics that will be available at opening, below. And for those eager ice cream eaters out there, stop by fourth floor of the Westfield Centre (under the dome) on Thursday from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. for a pop-up.
