When chef Daniel Patterson’s Oakland restaurant, Haven, closed at the end of February 2017 it was with vague plans to reopen “Haven 2.0.” Now comes news that it will open as an outpost of Alta, Patterson’s casual restaurant that originally opened in San Francisco’s Mid-Market neighborhood in 2013. If all goes according to plan, Alta Oakland will open its doors in spring 2018 as the third Alta in the Bay Area, cementing its status as a restaurant group of its own.
It’s part of a sea change within Daniel Patterson’s entire restaurant group (Daniel Patterson Group), as Patterson focuses his energy on growing a group based on Alta’s low-key cool appeal. As part of that focus, Alta is now part of its own aforementioned restaurant group (Alta Group), which also includes Alfred’s Steakhouse, and Plum Bar. Patterson’s other properties, including fine-dining flagship Coi and Aster, remain under Daniel Patterson Group.
Patterson says that Alta was never designed to be duplicated, but he chose it as the “growth vehicle” for the restaurant group. That growth includes the fall opening of Alta in Yotel, a hotel on Market Street just blocks from the original. The hotel property scenario is a first for Patterson; in this case the hotel and restaurant are partners, with Alta operating as a free-standing restaurant within, plus a rooftop bar. The hotel deal is the result of two years of negotiations, and will also result in the sale and closure of the original Alta location. The original Alta in Mid-Market will operate until the Yotel location is up and running this fall.
