Less Than a Month Until These Cocktails Are Flowing at Outside Lands

Meet the bar headliners

Tom Tomkinson

Cue the Outside Lands countdown: The food and drink festival in Golden Gate Park, which also happens to feature the musical talents of Metallica, A Tribe Called Quest, The Who, and Lorde this year, has just released the roster for its Cocktail Magic Tent, a collection of some of the top Bay Area bartending talent. On August 11-13, the booze headliners are Pacific Cocktail Haven, Horsefeather, Trou Normand, the Alembic, Homestead, and Whitechapel.

Located in the wooded McLaren Pass area, the Cocktail Magic tent provides a bit of a respite from the action of the Polo Fields. This year, to match the sleight of hand possessed by bartenders, the Cocktail Magic organizers are getting literal with the “magic” theme, hiring magicians including the Magic Castle’s Jon Armstrong and friends to perform tricks — sorry, illusions.

David Korins Design, the set designers for Broadway’s Hamilton, collaborated on the tent’s decor, which will include a casual, 9-foot tall “Cocktail King.” That graven booze idol will have a good view of the area where the GastroMagic stage has been set up in years past. That area has typically showcased collaborations from musicians and chefs; Picture Big Boi hanging with Stuart Brioza (State Bird Provisions). Right now would be a good time to review the entire food lineup for the festival — the clock is ticking, and August is right around the corner. Tickets can be purchased here.
