After five years in business, chef Preeti Mistry and wife/partner Ann Nadeau have decided to leave behind the original location of Juhu Beach Club, their popular Temescal restaurant. Thankfully the restaurant, the sale of which includes the liquor license, lease, and physical assets like kitchen equipment, will stay open while a potential buyer is found; the process could take several months.

“Juju is not going away, just the current iteration,” Mistry told Eater. “There will be a 3.0, we can’t totally talk about it yet but it’s not going away. I’m not going away.” Mistry recently opened Navi Kitchen, an all-day restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, and Indian pizzas. She’s also got a cookbook coming out soon, and a myriad of other opportunities the chef says she’s not ready to talk about just yet.

By her account, Juhu 1.0 was two years of pop-ups, followed by the opening of her brick-and-mortar location in a random strip mall in Temescal. Since then, Mistry’s been serving her style of Indian cuisine to visitors like Anthony Bourdain, and working on a cookbook with local author Sarah Henry, which comes out this fall.

“I just need to spread my wings a little bit beyond those four walls and have Juhu grow up in some different ways,” said Mistry. No word on what that growth will be, or where it will take place, just yet. It sounds like all bets are off — when asked if she’ll reopen Juhu in Oakland, Mistry said “no comment.” So maybe it’ll stay in Oakland, or maybe fans can expect to see location crop up in SF, or beyond. In the meantime, head over to Juhu Beach Club to catch it before it closes and soak in the colorful design and funky location; stay tuned to find out what might its place.

“I like to party all night but [my wife] has taught me to leave when the party is good,” said Mistry. “This location is great, people love it, and I wanted to announce it so people had the chance to eat there before it closed.”
