Sandwich savant Adam Mesnick of Deli Board is ready to open his spinoff, The Board, on February 1, pending final inspections and barring last-minute hiccups. The new location at 1077 Mission Street is the former home of Fenix, which closed last spring.
At The Board, Mesnick will have a space to focus on daily breakfast sandwiches, or “breakwiches,” which he only offers on weekends at the Deli Board mothership. He’ll also serve cheesesteaks, Chicago-style hot dogs, and favorites from his now-closed side projects 1058 Hoagie and Rye Project.
“The meat and bread combination we’ve got [at Deli Board] is really something special,” Mesnick told Eater SF last year, announcing the new project. But for a growing group of die-hard fans and regulars, “there’s not much I can do except upset people [with changes].”
With The Board, Mesnick will take some artistic license. Staples are likely to include The Board Cheesesteak (with thin-sliced ribeye, white american cheese, cherry peppers and Board sauce on an Amoroso roll — also available with falafel instead of ribey) and the “Haba” Dog (an all-beef grilled hot dog with habanero-infused sauerkraut, brown mustard, and a poppy seed bun).
Mesnick describes the new space, which boasts an open kitchen, as a conscious “build out on a budget.” Prices, mostly in the $8 to $12 range, reflect his effort to save up and keep things affordable for all of SoMa’s diverse clientele.
