New York-based Korean fried chicken chain Bonchon has swooped into Berkeley with its signature wings and more. The coming of the casual, buzz-worthy restaurant was announced in March, and it quietly opened just before the holidays, closing for New Year’s Eve and Day before returning yesterday.
Located at 2050 Berkeley Way right off Shattuck, the latest Bonchon branch isn’t the first in the Bay Area. Locations already operate in Daly City, San Mateo, and San Leandro. In fact, the Bonchon franchise empire is vast, with more than 200 worldwide locations, more than 50 of them in the US.
Bonchon’s forte are its fried chicken wings and drumsticks, served in soy garlic or spicy glaze with a side of pickled radish. But its menu extends beyond them to include appetizers like takoyaki, bulgogi sliders, and balls of mixed salmon, avocado, and crab meat covered in spicy may and tempura bits. Larger dishes include bibimbap, chicken katsu, and bull dak, a mix of spicy chicken and stir-fried rice cakes with mozzarella cheese and scallions. Beer, wine, and soju are available to drink.
Bonchon Berkeley has daily hours of 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. The whole menu is online here.
