Halal Guys Berkeley Opens for Urgent White Sauce Delivery Needs

The long-awaited location has nearly arrived

A Berkeley location of the popular New York-founded gyro, chicken, and falafel street food chain Halal Guys is open in Berkeley — though, as with the San Francisco location before it, it’s only doing delivery to start. Platters, sandwiches, baklava, and hummus are available through Caviar from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for lunch and 5 to 9 p.m. for dinner. A grand opening for the restaurant itself is coming soon, according to a Facebook post, and Eater SF has reached out for further details.

At the Halal Guys’ original New York food cart, which opened in 1990, fans still line up around the block for combo meats smothered in extremely hot red sauce and its soothing, creamy antidote: White sauce. Lines at the first SF Halal Guys followed suit, with patrons queuing up around the block on its opening day in January 2017.

While those have died down, Berkeley’s turn might be next, with students seeking fast, affordable food at nearby spots like Chick’n Rice and a hole left by the recent departure of slice joint Sliver. The Halal Guys wait has already been pretty lengthy, since the location, at 2126 Center Street in the former Le Regal space, has been in the works for years, announced back in 2015.
