A branch of the LINE Hotel, the chic boutique hotel chain that operates in LA, DC, and Austin, is coming to San Francisco at 950 Market Street. The Chronicle reports that Sydell Group, which manages other trendy hotel brands the NoMad and the Freehand, has signed on to a major forthcoming housing and hotel project from developer Group I. That development is already a decade in the making at 950-974 Market Street, and it’s now scheduled to arrive in fall 2020.
Handel Architects, which designed the building, is behind the 236-room hotel design. The LINE will include a ground-level bar and restaurant plus a nightclub and a rooftop bar. That’s just a blocks from another hip new hotel with its own restaurant and rooftop — the Proper Hotel, which opened last year.
Restaurant leases at the LINE SF haven’t been signed, but for context, the chain prides itself on good taste. Its Los Angeles location gained attention, in part, for its restaurants, lead by hometown hero Roy Choi until his recent departure.
In addition to the hotel tenant, Group I’s development project at 950 Market includes 242 condos, a space for the city’s historic Magic Theater, and 60 to 70 units of affordable housing in a related development at 180 Jones.
The LINE lease represents a twist in developer Group I’s plans: Earlier this year, the developer’s Chinese financial backer pulled out, reportedly due to restrictions on Chinese investment in the US, taking a plan for a Standard Hotel at the site off the table. Now Continental Development Corp., a Taiwanese real estate developer, is backing the project.
Eater SF has reached out to the Sydell Group for further news on the LINE SF, so stay tuned for follow up details.
Correction: A previous version of this post incorrectly identified Bjark Ingels Group as a designer on the project. They are not involved: Eater SF regrets the error.
