So many closures
After 37 years in business, Cybelle’s on Piedmont closed yesterday. The Oakland neighborhood pizza restaurant had been owned by the same family for its entire existence, and they decided to move on due to rising costs in labor and ingredients. The Cybelle’s franchise does operate five other Bay Area restaurants: in downtown Oakland, Montclair, East Oakland, Daly City, and the Inner Sunset.
A taste of Reem’s at Media Noche
For the month of November, Media Noche is featuring a cubano as envisioned by Reem Assil (Reem’s, Dyafa). Dubbed “La Palestina,” the sandwich combines sumac-braised chicken, pepper jack cheese, pomegranate onions, harissa yogurt, arugula, and whole grain mustard for $13.50. Plus, 10 percent of proceeds will benefit the Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC).

A taqueria swap
Gordito Amigos is now open in Berkeley’s former Gordo Taqueria space at 2404 Telegraph Avenue, serving tacos and burritos with “California flair.”
Volta ice cream
In case you haven’t seen all the billboards, the new Cirque du Soleil is coming to SF this month. Humphry Slocobome made a new tart, smoky ice cream flavor inspired by the production: Earl Grey with burnt lemon. It’s available starting today at all Bay Area locations.
Student-friendly Cantonese
China Center is now open at 2142 Center Street near the UC Berkeley campus, with lunch plates from a steam table starting at $5.99 as well as a Cantonese menu. It took over the former Guacamole 61 space.
