You Have More Chances to Score Some of the Bay Area’s Best Barbecue

Plus new Burmese food, coffee, and more

Beef rib plate at Smokin’ Woods Bill Addison

Sweet, sweet barbecue

Smokin’ Woods BBQ has been operating just Sundays and Mondays at 2nd Half Bar & Lounge, bringing long lines to Oakland’s Temescal for James Woodard’s enormous beef ribs and Texas-style brisket. But those waits might decrease a bit, now that Smokin’ Woods is popping up at the sports bar five days a week instead of just two. This week and beyond, you can find Woodard’s team there Thursday through Monday.

Samosa soup and ginger salad

Civic Center just got a new Burmese restaurant at 154 McAllister Street. Beyond Burma’s menu is a little more creative than most of the Bay Area’s Burmese spots, with dishes like “Burmese ramen” with a coconut chicken curry soup and tea leaf salad with pomegranate seeds and arugula.

More coffee in Temescal

Burlap Coffee is now open just steps away from the MacArthur BART station in Oakland. The spacious cafe, formerly Cafe Maricela, serves basic espresso drinks in a bright yellow space with grab-your-own pastries from a cabinet, panaderia style.

The governor’s sandwich order

Apparently newly elected governor Gavin Newsom’s go-to sandwich at Deli Board is the Ron: roast beef, cheddar cheese, jalapenos, avocado, slaw, and sauce on a garlic French roll. Judge away.
