Ambitious New Manresa Bread Cafe Opens Next Week

Plus bar fare on Polk Street, kouign amanns in Berkeley, and more

An opening date for the new Manresa Bread

The third location for Manresa Bread — Avery Ruzicka’s bakery offshoot of David Kinch’s fine dining destination Manresa — is set to open in Campbell next Wednesday, November 14. Unlike its other locations, the 2,100-square-foot Campbell spot will be an all-day cafe with far more food options alongside beer, wine, and cocktails.

Fresh bar grub

Revelers at Polk Street bar Cabin can now order American small plates from neighboring restaurant 1760 — the sister restaurant to Michelin-starred Acquerello — without exiting the bar’s doors. Customers order duck sliders, lumpia, grilled ribs in hoisin, and pork tostadas directly from a Cabin bartender and get a buzzer for when it’s time to pick up their order at 1760.

A future retail spot for Starter Bakery

Berkeleyside has a lengthy dive into popular East Bay wholesaler Starter Bakery’s move to a new production space in Berkeley’s former Pyramid Brewery. Starter is not just expanding its wholesale operation, though — it’s also working on its first retail location, which will be attached to the production space and open for slinging buttery kouign amanns in spring 2019.

The Mission loses a cafe

After eight years in business, Valencia Street cafe the Blue Fig has closed. According to note posted on the door, the owners couldn’t find people to staff it.

South Bay sweets

The first North San Jose outpost of California-born chain See’s Candies opens Friday, November 9, at 1088 E. Brokaw Road. At 9:30 a.m. that day, the first 100 customers in line will get a free tote, and all customers who spend $25 or more will get an assorted candy box.

The people have spoken

The votes are in and now there are four nominees for this year’s People’s Choice Award at San Francisco’s leading industry awards show, the Saucy Awards, taking place Monday, November 12. Now it’s time to vote for the winner between ‘Aina, Scoma’s, Bob’s Steak & Chop House, and A Mano.

Of course, you should vote in the general election today too...

And here is where you should watch the returns and snag discounts for voting. Look out for updates throughout today.
