The PlumpJack Group’s recently updated Marina nightclub MatrixFillmore, rechristened simply Matrix, has closed. The PlumpJack team will retain the space at 3138 Fillmore Street and plan something new for it — but it won’t be “a new iteration of Matrix,” a representative tells Eater SF. After all, Matrix sequels rarely succeed.
“PlumpJack is in the midst of a pending office renovation above the space and wasn’t sure what the impact would be to the building,” the representative explains. Thus they’ve suspended regular operations, but will reopen for private events.
Stay tuned for what’s next in the space, which has a rich history: Before it was bought in 2000 by PlumpJack, it was once a rock club founded by Jefferson Airplane’s Marty Balin. And PlumpJack, as politicos know, has an interesting history of its own. The group grew out of the Marina wine store PlumpJack Wines, opened in 1992 by now Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom before he began his political career.
