Ali Wong will return to her native San Francisco in May to shoot a straight-to-streaming romantic comedy for Netflix, starring as a celebrity chef opening her next restaurant. Variety reports that Wong, who wrote for ABC’s Fresh off the Boat and starred (along with her serious baby bulge) in the Netflix standup comedy special Baby Cobra, is working on the script for the feature with costar Randall Park, who stars on Fresh Off the Boat as patriarch Louis Huang. The film doesn’t yet have a title, but will be directed by Fresh Off The Boat show runner Kahnatchka Khan.
The plot: Childhood sweethearts reconnect 15 years after they’ve last seen one another. She’s a celebrity chef enjoying success in San Francisco, while he’s a struggling musician living at home and working for his dad. Also, they’re both smokin’ hot. Stay tuned for more details on the project, should any be necessary.
As it so happens, Wong recently logged a prominent food TV appearance on David Chang’s Netflix show Ugly Delicious, visiting a Glendale, California location of Din Tai Fung for soup dumplings with the celebrated chef, That outing might have doubled as research for her upcoming role.
Finally, news of Wong’s new film wasn’t the only Bay Area food-related Netflix comedy revelation of the week. Amy Poehler recently announced plans to direct her first film, Wine Country, with Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch, Maya Rudolph, and Ana Gasteyer, in Napa this summer.
