Kahlua pork sandwiches are moving to Third Street

The Wooly Pig Cafe, whose Kahlua pork sandwich has brought warm fuzzy feelings to Inner Sunset customers since 2011, will close at its current location but reopen in Dogpatch. The final day to say farewell to the cafe at 205 Hugo Street is Sunday March 11, and the new version will greet Dogpatch patrons in “early May,” arriving at 2295 Third Street (at 20th Street) in the former Dogpatch Cafe space.

UCSF workers and Inner Sunset residents will surely mourn the loss of local access to The Wooly Pig’s creative and affordable sandwiches created by co-owner Lieng Souryavong, including the signature Wooly Pig (with Shanghai-style braised caramel pork belly. But the space won’t be vacant long, as new business owners have already snapped up the space according to Wooly Pig proprietors. Details on the newcomers’ plans aren’t yet public.

“This was a very difficult decision that we had to make,” Wooly Pig owners wrote in a goodbye Facebook post to the Inner Sunset. “We want to thank you all for your constant support and loyalty. We owe you all a lifetime of gratitude.”

At the cafe’s new stomping grounds on Third Street, the Wooly Pig will have 1,861 square feet of space and, potentially, a type 41 beer and wine license, which the Inner Sunset location lacked. It joins a still-burgeoning neighborhood dining scene, shacking up near established spots like Serpentine, casual eateries like Long Bridge Pizza, and new businesses like Noon All Day, which opened recently to serve an influx of Caltrain commuters and UCSF Mission Bay workers.

Speaking of which, some UCSF Parnassus folks dependent on Wooly Pig for lunch might be forgiven the temptation to change specialties and transfer to the new medical campus to follow the cafe.
