San Jose Airport Lands Shake Shack, Chick-Fil-A, Trader Vic’s Outposts

Burgers and Mai Tais for layovers

Shake Shack

Mineta-San Jose International Airport might fly under the radar of San Francisco-based travelers, but three new attention-grabbing businesses could change that: Shake Shack, Chick-Fil-A, and an offshoot of Emeryville-based tiki bar and restaurant Trader Vic’s. The San Jose City Council just approved a six-year extension of a contract with airport food service company HMS Host that will bring those new dining options and others to Terminals A and B. Your move, SFO.

Word of a new Bay Area Shake Shack could cause a particular stir, as did news of the NY-based burger brand’s first Bay Area locations, which are coming to Marin, Palo Alto, and San Francisco. But don’t book travel to and from San Jose just for a Shack Burger and an original Mai Tai, at least not yet. The new dining options are arriving “by 2020.”

SJC already boasts a location of Pizza My Heart, a Sushi Boat, and a Smash Burger. And as part of the contact extension, it’s also promised a beer hall called International Beer Union and a location of the international bagel chain Great American Bagel. Meanwhile, SFO’s offerings have steadily improved, and have come to include a branch of Daly City dim sum spot Koi Palace and burgers, shakes, and more from Gott’s Roadside.
