Berkeley Oaxacan-style restaurant Comal is ready to roll out the tacos, burritos, and buttermilk fried chicken tortas at its casual neighboring counterpart, Comal Next Door. Today is the first day for quick-service items at 2024 Shattuck in the 1,300-square-foot, 20-seat space, designed by Studio KDA. The full menu from Comal chef Matt Gandin, available to dine-in or take-out, is below.
Gandin, previously of Delfina, opened Comal itself in 2012 under owners John Paluska and Andrew Hoffman. It’s gained acclaim ever since, not least for its strong cocktail program. Comal Next Door will add a faster, counter-service component to the existing business. And as the name would suggest, it’s located right alongside the main restaurant, in the former Phil’s Sliders space.
The new menu at Comal Next Door overlaps slightly with the existing one, but there’s one particular innovation of note: Soft serve.
Comal Next Door is open from Sunday to Thursday from 11:00 a.m, to 9:00 pm and Fridays and Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 pm.
